Chhath Puja: Securing a train ticket across northern and eastern railway corridors becomes notoriously difficult ahead of Diwali and Chhath Puja. Routes heading toward Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal frequently hit waiting lists months in advance, often moving into "regret" status, where no further tickets can be sold. Many travelers assume that once the first reservation chart is published, booking closes entirely.

However, Indian Railways maintains a mechanism known as the Current Booking facility. This feature allows passengers to claim vacant berths after the primary chart is prepared, offering a practical alternative for last-minute travel.

How the Current Booking System Operates

When the first reservation chart is finalized, unused administrative quotas and late cancellations leave open berths in various coaches. The railway reservation system automatically channels these remaining berths into the current booking pool.

Unlike regular advance reservations, the current booking system does not issue waitlisted tickets. Every ticket processed through this channel is an immediate, guaranteed confirmed berth. Passengers can access this inventory directly through the official IRCTC website and mobile application, as well as physical current booking counters at railway stations.

Pricing remains the same as standard base reservation fares, meaning travelers do not pay surcharges simply for booking late.

Chart Timing and Preparation Schedules

Knowing when charts are generated is key to checking berth availability:

  • Trains departing between 5:01 AM and 2:00 PM: The first chart is typically prepared around 8:00 PM the previous evening.
  • Trains departing between 2:01 PM and 5:00 AM: The first chart is finalized at least 10 hours prior to departure.
  • The second and final chart: Generated roughly 30 minutes before the train leaves its origin station. This final update accounts for last-minute cancellations and station-level seat reallocations.

Checking the IRCTC app immediately after these windows open can reveal newly released berths, even on trains that previously showed zero availability.

Realistic Expectations and Cancellation Rules

While current booking provides a legitimate opportunity, it remains dependent on whether vacant berths actually open up. On high-density festival dates, demand regularly outstrips supply, so travelers should view current booking as a useful backup rather than an absolute certainty.

Passengers should also pay close attention to refund policies. Tickets booked under current booking can be cancelled, but because reservations occur so close to train departure, cancellation rules are significantly stricter than standard tickets, resulting in higher deduction fees. Verifying travel plans before confirming the transaction prevents unnecessary financial loss.
