AFI Proclaims BLAZING SADDLES the Funniest Movie of All Time

The Traditional Comedy Takes its Rightful Place on “AFI’s 100 Laughs” Checklist as Mel Brooks turns 100

In honor of Mel Brooks’ a hundredth birthday, the American Movie Institute (AFI) hereby proclaims BLAZING SADDLES (1974) the funniest movie of all time on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

That is an honorary reorganization of the Institute’s signature AFI’s 100 YEARS…100 LAUGHS listing, advancing BLAZING SADDLES (1974) from its long-held place at #6 to the #1 spot – all in respect for the presents given the world by Brooks, the AFI Life Achievement Award honoree who has lengthy kvetched that his movie is way funnier than SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959).

“He’s proper!,” mentioned Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO.  “We’re completely satisfied to proper this improper as Mel celebrates his centennial. It’s good to be the king, and should he stay to be a 2,000 yr previous man. Glad birthday, Mel!”.

Brooks is the one filmmaker with three movies within the prime 15 – BLAZING SADDLES, THE PRODUCERS (#11) and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (#13).
